The Michelson precision interferometer is still an important instrument in today's laboratories. As the most typical instrument for interferometry, Michelson interferometer is often the first to be introduced to students
The Fabry-Perot interferometer is also and important contemporary tool, designed in 1899 by C. Fabry and A. Perot. There is a significant improvement over the Michelson interferometer, allowing much more precise measurements of wavelength, and free spectral range.
A Twyman-Green interferometer is a very useful variant of the Michelson interferometer,principally used to measure defects in optical components such as lenses, prisms, plane-parallel windows, laser rods, and plane mirrors. The difference is that the Michelson interferometer is used with an extended light source, while the Twyman-Green interferometer is used with a monochromatic point source which is located at the principal focus of a well-corrected lens.
Measurements are precise in three modes of operation. Switching between the three modes of operation and aligning components are relatively simple, as this complete set of high quality components is carefully mounted on a heavy, stable base.
