The great advantage is that one should have various size of Optical Parallel to check Micrometers ranging from 25 to 300 mm. This Single Instrument is capable of performing Inspection of Micrometers of all sizes.
Principle :
Light from an autocollimator is incident on the right angle prism that is resting on its hypotenuse. The prism is positioned such that the apex bisects the beam and directed opposite to each other towards the end faces of the micrometer. The 45˚ surfaces of the prism are aligned with the micrometer ends.
Light after reflecting from the prism hits the two faces of the micrometer and retraces back the same path. Two images in the form of cross lines are seen. In the ideal condition (tips parallel to each other perpendicular to their axis) the light retraces the same path and no shift of the images is observed. In the condition when there is an error one shall observe a shift and separation of the images from the center.
The prism mount can be tilted and rotated to do the initial alignment. Prism angles are maintained to within 1 arc second.
